Is Europe a fortress or a refuge? Who are the winners and who are the losers of the single market? Did the Maastricht Treaty create unity or discord? Does the ‘EU experiment’ have a democratic deficit or is it a democratic challenge? There is a lot to be said for European integration, but there are also objections. This is what we want to make young people in particular think about.
That’s why over the past year, we worked with the makers of Historisch Nieuwsblad and educational author Tom van der Geugten on a new, free educational magazine: Europa voor en tegen. It is written for a broad target group aged 16 and over and can be used as teaching material for the last classes of secondary education (HAVO/VWO), as well as for intermediate and higher vocational education. In upper secondary education, Europa voor en tegen can be used as a theme for the final school examinations in history and/or social studies.
Orders from the entire Dutch language area
Teachers and schools can order a free copy or class set via our website. Since the announcement, orders poured in from schools all over the Netherlands and Flanders. The magazine rolled off the press last week and the first batch is now on its way to more than 80 secondary schools.
The magazine in English
Due to the great interest, Europa voor en tegen will also be published in English in November 2023. It is now possible to pre-order the English edition.
About Europa voor en tegen
The magazine Europa voor en tegen paints a nuanced picture of the European Union using current, and often debated, topics placed in a historical perspective. The magazine covers topics such as the history of European integration, democracy, the internal market and the euro, migration, defence, environment and climate, and diversity.
Ordering Europa voor en tegen
Students can work with a hardcopy in class and outside with a PDF version of the magazine. Teachers can order a free class set consisting of 31 magazines, a teacher’s guide and workbooks, answer keys and a final open book test for both HAVO and VWO .
