Would you introduce the euro? Or European citizenship? Next Friday, you can decide for yourself. During Museumnacht, Studio Europa Maastricht and Maastricht Museum present a new and accessible exhibition on the Treaty of Maastricht at Centre Céramique. With this treaty, the EU was established and the groundwork was laid for the introduction of the common European currency.
The exhibition features the original table on which the treaty was signed in 1992. You can take a seat at the table and sign a dummy of the treaty. Furthermore, the exhibition focuses on the city’s story during the historic European summit of December 1991. With this gathering in Maastricht, the leaders of what was then still called the European Community put the finishing touches on the treaty. Original newspapers from those days reveal the ins and outs of the exciting negotiations, the numerous protests, and demonstrations. Various unique objects unveil what happened during the two-day summit at key locations such as Château Neercanne, the Town Hall, and the Government Building. Additionally, the exhibition demonstrates how institutions like Maastricht University cleverly capitalized on the Euro Summit and the publicity the treaty brought to the city.
Experts from Studio Europa Maastricht and Maastricht Museum will be available during Museumnacht to provide explanations about the exhibition, which will be further expanded in the coming months.
