On April 11, during Museum Night Maastricht, Studio Europa Maastricht hosted two packed cartooning workshops at Centre Céramique with acclaimed political cartoonists Nanne Meulendijks (Trouw) and Maarten Wolterink (Vrij Nederland). The workshops drew a large and enthusiastic crowd. The atmosphere was buzzing with creativity and curiosity, as visitors eagerly sketched along, asked questions, and got a glimpse into the world of political cartooning.
The workshops were part of the European Cartoon Award, which celebrates the art of political cartooning across Europe. You can see the thought-provoking works of the 2024 finalists on display in the Lintvitrine at Centre Céramique until May 1. The award, honours courage and quality in cartooning and keeps the conversation about Europe alive — one drawing at a time.

The European Cartoon Award (ECA) was founded in 2019 to encourage cartoonists in their vital role and stimulate conversations about Europe. Presented annually by Studio Europa Maastricht, the award recognises the impact of cartoons on societal dialogue. In 2025, the ECA will be partnering with the Museum for Sound & Vision. The ECA’25 and Cartoons Day are supported by the City of The Hague, and Stimuleringsfonds voor de Journalistiek.
