DutchCulture on Tour: panel discussion ‘Station to station: Limburg creators across the border’

17 May 2023 | 14:1515:30

| Spoken language: Dutch

It is still too often thought that if you want to make it as an artist, you have to go to the Randstad or abroad. Moderator Amber-Helena Reisig of Studio Europa Maastricht, a local creative herself, talks to three successful makers who have stayed in or returned to Limburg: what motivated them to settle in this Euregional province? How can you cooperate (inter)nationally? How do you keep talent from leaving and how do you attract talent? Artist Sanne Vaassen, cultural project developer Raenys Martis and dancer and consultant Jop Vermeesch are seeing opportunities: station to station; from Limburg to the rest of the country and across the border.

This panel discussion is part of the larger programme ‘DutchCulture on Tour x Limburg-based Creators’, which will take place in Maastricht on Wednesday 17 May 2023. This event is in Dutch.

Raenys Martis | Cultural project developer (curator and initiator of, amongst others, the Heerlen Murals projects)

In addition to his work as a curator and cultural project developer, Raenys Martis is a DJ and event organiser and works nationally and abroad on street art interventions in public spaces. Raenys collaborates with national and international artists on exhibitions in galleries and numerous other art-related activities. His initiatives, creations and making revolve around hip-hop and a Do It Yourself attitude.

Sanne Vaassen | Artist

A central theme in Sanne Vaassen’s objects, videos, performances and installations are processes of change and time. Sanne explores the fluid transition of phenomena and matter, such as the cycle of water, the transformation of a tree during the seasons, the evolution of language, cartographies and national flags. Her work addresses themes of ecology, geography, history and anthropology. Her work has been shown in several group and solo exhibitions, such as Boijmans van Beuningen (Rotterdam, NL), SCHUNCK, (Heerlen, NL), SALTS (Basel, CH), Unit 1 Gallery (London, UK), Bonnefantenmuseum (Maastricht, NL). In addition, Sanne was a resident at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in 2014-2015.

Jop Vermeesch | Cultural entrepreneur, dancer, organiser and consultant on hip-hop culture and ‘urban’ affairs

As co-founder of KoolCult, Jop has been committed to strengthening the hip-hop community in Heerlen for years. He supports dancers, musicians and artists where they need it, through coaching, networking, fundraising and advice. Besides his active role within hip-hop, Jop was also ‘matchmaker culture’ from 2017-2020. His ambition? To develop a solid vision for urban culture so that it can grow into a fully-fledged cultural and sports discipline.

Moderator | Amber-Helena Reisig

Amber-Helena Reisig will moderate the panel from her role as creative at Studio Europa Maastricht. A poet and prose writer, she is under contract to publishers Prometheus for a novel and poetry collection. In the years 2013 and 2014, she was the city poet of Heerlen. Her work was included in several anthologies and published in Das Mag and De Volkskrant, among others. As a poetry slammer, she has been performing on stages in the Netherlands, Flanders and Canada since the age of twelve, including six years at theatre festival de Parade. She regularly writes on commission for TV, radio and government agencies. She currently works as a content creator at Studio Europa Maastricht, a centre of expertise for Europe-related debate and research.

About this event

Are you from or living in Limburg and do you have (inter)national cultural ambitions? Or are you afraid to dream about it because you don’t know what the possibilities are or where to start? Then mark Wednesday 17 May in your diary, because DutchCulture on Tour is coming to Maastricht to inform you about all the possibilities!

During this edition of DutchCulture on Tour, we will help makers and cultural organisations from the province of Limburg with questions about (inter)national cultural cooperation. Even if your focus is mainly on the Netherlands or if you are just starting out, this event is interesting for you. For instance, what can you do to expand your network? Which funding opportunities are best suited to your project? And how do you find a partner to work with?

DutchCultureStudio Europa Maastricht and the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme have joined forces to share our knowledge, provide advice and engage with creators, festivals, cultural institutions and cultural workers.
