EU as a patchwork of nations: Stitching together European diversity

Discover the many threads that shape Europe during BlockParty on Sunday, 7 June 2026, organized by FASHIONCLASH in collaboration with Studio Europa Maastricht.
In the lecture “European member{state}ship: united in diversity” at Centre Céramique, you will learn more about how the EU functions as a patchwork of national identities.
The lecture will be given in Dutch and in English by Johan Adriaensen, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Maastricht University, where he holds a Jean Monnet Chair on the EU Member States. His research explores how member states engage with and (resist) adapt(ation) to the evolving demands of EU governance. He teaches courses on European integration and EU Public Policy.

The lectures are part of the wider BlockParty festival at Plein 1992, a free contemporary neighbourhood celebration of Maastricht Year 2026 featuring performances, workshops, music, fashion presentations, guided tours, and a community picnic. During the event, the complete TexTiles tapestry will also be unveiled.

About TexTiles
TexTiles is a participatory art project by FASHIONCLASH and Studio Europa Maastricht, created in collaboration with Centre Céramique and Maastricht Museum. Inspired by the Maastricht Treaty (1992), residents from across the region have been creating individual 40 x 40 cm textile tiles reflecting their perspectives on Europe today. Together, they form a large collective textile artwork that will cover Plein 1992.
