European Cartoon Award
The European Cartoon Award is a prize for political cartoons worldwide. Every year, the ECA celebrates this profession with the ECA ‘Cartoons Day’, an event dedicated to political cartoons, with panels, workshops, debates, and the Award Ceremony of the European Cartoon Award 2024.
Cartoons Day 2024
The main theme of this edition will be polarization: We live in a world where positions and opinions are becoming increasingly polarized. Wars and disasters, and the effect of social media on the public sphere, generate a climate of anger, making it difficult to discuss important matters. This situation affects editorial cartoonists as well. They have to deal with controversies, online hate, job insecurity, and real threats to their safety.
And yet, their cartoons have never been so popular, traveling the world and going viral very easily. Why is that so?The panels and workshops that will be held, will help us unpack this topic. We will talk about it with experts, academics, editors, activists and, of course, world-class political cartoonists. There will be space for debate, reflection and to draw your own political cartoon!After the afternoon program, we will discover who the winner of the ECA 2024 is, during our Award Ceremony, with the three 2024 finalists. Right after, we will inaugurate the ECA 2024 exhibition.

How do editors choose political cartoons? With Danusia Schenke (Trouw), Lofti El Hamidi (NRC), Ben Jennings (cartoonist at The Guardian). Moderated by Gian-Paolo Accardo (Voxeurop)
17:30-18:15 (Breakout room): STAY SAFE. LEGAL SAFETY FOR CARTOONISTS
A workshop dedicated to political cartoonists to give them tools to be safe in the offline/online space. With Terry Anderson (Cartoonists Rights), Flutura Kusari (ECPMF), Carlos Gaio (Media Defence)

A deep dive into the history of Dutch political cartoons with Jop Euwijk (Beeld & Geluid) and a hands-on drawing session with Maarten Wolterink (cartoonist)
