What to expect on 1 September?
As a prospective postdoc applicant, you will get the opportunity to meet the first generation postdocs of Studio Europa (2019-2021). They will discuss the requirements of the position, how to strengthen your application and, more generally, talk about their experience at Studio Europa Maastricht. Ask them all your pressing questions!

- 12:50 – 13:00: Dr. Giulia Piccillo (School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University) – The impact of uncertainty on misinformation and fake news in Europe – insights from an Assistant Professor cooperating with Studio Europa
- 13:00 – 13:15: Dr. Catalina Goanta (Postdoctoral Researcher Theme 4) – The monetization of the self: the regulation of social media influencers – insights from a postdoc’s experience
- 13:20– 13:50: Interaction and questions from the participants on themes of interest: research, valorisation, administrative and human resources, any other aspects
- 13:55 – 14:00: Closing remarks

About the post-doctoral research positions
On 1 July 2020, we launched six research funding calls of which call 1 aims to attract five talented postdocs to push forward our strategic ‘Maastricht, Working on Europe’ research agenda. The four main themes of this research agenda are:
- Theme 1: Democracy, Politics, Security and Rule of Law (1 postdoc position available);
- Theme 2: Identity, Heritage and the Citizens’ Perspective (1 postdoc position available);
- Theme 3: Prosperity, Welfare and Inequality (2 postdoc positions available);
- Theme 4: Knowledge, Technology and Digitalisation (1 postdoc position available).
Who can apply for a postdoc position?
- Are you an early-career researcher who recently obtained a PhD degree or are close to acquiring one?
- Do you fit well within the interdisciplinary model of the Maastricht, Working on Europe research agenda?
- Do you have an academic background in areas ranging from European Studies/Political Science to Law, or Philosophy, Economics, Demography or Epidemiology, as well as other data-driven sciences?
- And are you a faculty member (e.g. Assistant Professor / Lecturer) wishing to concentrate more on your research and its societal impact and valorisation during your time at Studio Europa Maastricht?

Speakers’ bios
Prof Dr. Mathieu Segers: is Europa Chair at Studio Europa Maastricht and Professor of Contemporary European History and European Integration at Maastricht University. He has been a Fulbright-Schuman fellow at the Center for European Studies of Harvard University and Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Politics and IR at the University of Oxford. In his research, he currently focuses on the history and pre-history of European integration and trans-Atlantic relations, on which he publishes in international scholarly journals of different disciplines.
Dr. Neculai-Cristian Surubaru: is a Postdoctoral Researcher in European Studies. He obtained a PhD in Political Science from Loughborough University. In his research, he currently focuses on East-West relations within the European Union. His papers were published by journals such as, the Journal of Common Market Studies (JCMS), Regional Studies, European Politics and Society and East European Politics.
Dr. Catalina Goanta: is an Assistant Professor in Private Law at the Faculty of Law, postdoctoral researcher at Studio Europa (Maastricht Working on Europe) and manages the Maastricht Law and Tech Lab together with Gijs van Dijck and Marcel Schaper. Her current research addresses decentralization and platform governance, with projects such as the regulation of social media influencers, where she looks at the moderation and contractual control of monetized content on social media. Catalina is an advocate of 21st century skills in legal education and has been awarded the Maastricht University Wijnand Wijnen education prize in 2014.
Dr. Giulia Piccillo: is an Assistant Professor of Macroeconomics at the School of Business and Economics at Maastricht University. Her research focuses on the source and impact of animal spirits on the economy. As a way to integrate her academic work, she traveled extensively and visited numerous policy institutions (including the IMF, the ECB, CPB, The Federal Reserve) as well as universities worldwide (Frankfurt University, Stanford University). Her most recent projects involve the study of fake news and misinformation in Europe in the context of COVID-19 and its policy consequences.
