Let’s discuss the future of the EU

Wopke Hoekstra, the European Commissioner for Climate Action, will visit Maastricht University on Tuesday 21 May.

Wopke Hoekstra (1975) has been European Commissioner for Climate Action since October 9, 2023 in the Von der Leyen Commission.
Previously, Hoekstra was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Rutte IV cabinet and Minister of Finance in the Rutte III cabinet. From 2011 to 2017 he was a member of the Senate of the States General.

Hoekstra studied law at Leiden University and LUISS Guido Carli in Rome and obtained an MBA at INSEAD in Fontainebleau. He was previously a partner at McKinsey and worked at Shell. Furthermore, he was chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Maritime Museum and ambassador of the Princess Máxima Center for pediatric oncology.

Hoekstra and his wife Liselot have four children and live in Bussum. He likes sports and reading.

Hoekstra plans to discuss the “Grand Challenges” facing the European Union, with a focus on climate actiondemocratic renewal, and geopolitics. His speech aims to outline pressing issues and propose solutions for the future of the European Union. Following his talk, Commissioner Hoekstra will answer questions from students from different faculties, encouraging their participation in the upcoming European Parliament elections.

The event is organised by Studio Europa Maastricht in collaboration with CERiM, the SUM2030 sustainability program, and Maastricht University’s Faculties of Law and Arts and Social Sciences. The event is organised as part of the Jean Monnet Module on “EU Democracy: Engaging Young Citizens”, which is co-funded by the European Union.
