Speech of the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella

Studio Europa Maastricht is honoured to host the President of the Italian Republic: Sergio Mattarella, at the Gouvernement aan de Maas in Maastricht. In the morning of 11 November 2022 the President will give a speech in relation to the Maastricht Treaty.

Thirty years Maastricht Treaty
At the invitation of His Majesty the King, President Mattarella will pay a three-day state visit to the Netherlands. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Maastricht Treaty, the President will visit the capital of Limburg in the morning of 11 November. During his speech, he will reflect on strengthening shared European values, European integration and cooperation between the Netherlands and Italy in the European context. Afterwards, the president will engage in a discussion with students on the future of Europe.

Programme
Prior to the President’s speech, there will be a discussion between moderator and former Italy correspondent Eveline Rethmeier and Mathieu Segers, Professor of contemporary European history and European integration at Maastricht University. Together, they will provide context for the President’s visit and discuss Italy’s pivotal role in European unification since the signing of the Maastricht Treaty. Afterwards, writer Kiriko Mechanicus will recite a Dutch-Italian poem written especially for the occasion.
