The Dutch chapter of the 89 Initiative and Studio Europa Maastricht are pleased to welcome the two new research directors for the climate and democracy programmes of the 89 Initiative. Dr Serdar Türkeli will direct the research programme on climate, and Dr Christian Scholl has been appointed to the research programme on democracy.
About the research directors

Dr Türkeli conducts policy research at the United Nations University-Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT), an institute which works closely with Maastricht University. In his research, Dr Türkeli applies quantitative and/or qualitative methods to issues in the field of environmental regulation, circular economics, sustainable development, eco-innovation and green economics.

Dr Christian Scholl is an assistant professor at the Maastricht Sustainability Institute at Maastricht University. His research focuses on urban sustainability, participatory and collaborative forms of governance, social movements and social learning. He has coordinated several transdisciplinary research projects on City Labs and Urban Living Labs which have resulted in interactive and reflexive support tools for practitioners and their experimental learning processes. In previous research, Dr Scholl studied counter-globalization protests in Europe, new forms of protest and control and the climate justice movement.
Both directors are charged with conducting a research project which will include innovative policy recommendations related to ongoing policy debates. In their research, they will be supported by a team of research officers. The project’s recommendations will be included in an annual set of publications which will be published and presented at a major annual event in Brussels in April 2022.
What’s next?
At the start of the new academic year, 89 Netherlands and Studio Europa Maastricht will launch a call for applications for the research officer positions. The research directors are especially interested in students with thorough research skills (preferably bachelor or master students in their final year) and PhD-researchers. This opportunity is particularly interesting for those who wish to shape European policy agendas by reaching out to local stakeholders and tapping into local policy debates. Furthermore, these research officers will become part of a growing pan-European network of people shaping and making European policy. They will also closely collaborate with the team of Studio Europa Maastricht.
About 89 Netherlands
89 Netherlands is the Dutch chapter of the pan-European think-do tank the 89 Initiative, a policy network aimed at mobilising a new generation of thinkers and practitioners in the revitalisation of the European Project. The 89 Initiative was founded in 2015 by students at the London School of Economics and is represented by several other regional chapters across Europe. It seeks to harness the energy of a new generation of European thinkers, infusing local, national and European political debate with joined-up thinking about Europe and the world.
