PhD-Researcher
Thales Bertaglia is a PhD researcher based jointly at Studio Europa and the Institute of Data Science at Maastricht University. His research aims to increase fairness and transparency in the digital ecosystem, focusing on how social media platforms shape engagement driven by content monetization. In the European Union, platform governance regulation is in full swing. In under a year, the European Commission has launched some of the most important legal reforms concerning harms arising in the digital economy, including the Digital Services Act package and the Artificial Intelligence Act. In this context, interdisciplinary research looking at social media platforms’ digital architecture and economic incentives is fundamental — especially considering trends such as content monetization that are currently shaping the future of platform governance.
